Employee Recognition: Giving Workers the Credit They Deserve
Your employees work hard, and they need to be treated like people as opposed to robots. When a worker takes on a huge responsibility and succeeds, it can be incredibly beneficial to display employee recognition. If someone feels like they are not properly valued at their company, then they may eventually get burned out and start looking for work somewhere else. Everyone likes feeling that they are appreciated, and a few little things can really make the difference in the attitude of your employees.
Build a Sense of Camaraderie
Your employees are people with complex personalities and a vast array of interests, but the only time when you really get a chance to talk with them is when you are discussing expense reports and building your company’s consumer base. You should look into building a real sense of community within your business, and there are various ways you can go about doing this. Some of the methods to increase employee recognition include:
-Go out to lunch every so often. You could even go out to happy hour at a nearby restaurant in order to let everyone let loose every once in a while.
-Give your employees gym memberships so that they are encourage to exercise regularly and stay healthy. They can even go to the gym as a group or take classes together.
-Throw a holiday party. At the end of the year, it can be a lot of fun to have a party where people can dance, drink and be merry.
As someone’s boss, you want to avoid becoming too chummy with your subordinates. However, by having fun outings somewhat frequently, you can do a lot in showing your employees that you do care about your hard work and that you are willing to reward their dedication to the business.
Increase in Pay and Bonuses
This is one form of employee recognition that your workers are certain to love. An increase in salary is one of the best ways to motivate your hardest working employees. Someone who takes on numerous responsibilities for the company and is not compensated for their work may start to resent the company and do less work. You can bring up the potential for an increased salary during an employee performance review meeting. If an increase in pay is not in the cards right now, it can be just as beneficial to award a cash bonus at the end of the year. Throughout the year, it can be fun to give your employees gift cards for a job well done on a certain project. Everyone could use a little extra cash to pay the bills, and it is one of the simplest ways to showcase employee recognition.
Vacation Time and Paid Time Off
If you work your employees too hard, eventually they are going to become burnt out and performance is going to suffer. There is a lot of good that can be done by giving your employees paid time off and plenty of vacation time so that they can enjoy some much needed relaxation. Offering time off without pay may make your workers more hesitant to go on vacation, especially if money is tight. Do not make your employees choose between paying rent and having a nice little vacation. Bonus vacation days can also be an excellent incentive to getting your employees to finish a big project on time.
The Little Things
Although grand gestures like a big office party or bountiful vacation time are nice, you can do a bunch of little things throughout the year in order to showcase employee recognition. Send an email after an employee has completed a project in order to thank him or her for a job well done. This is an excellent way to show that you notice the hard work your employees do every single day, and it does not go unnoticed. You can also do a lot of good by walking through the office frequently and meeting with your workers face-to-face. Shake their hands and let them know how much they are valued.
Your employees work hard, and if they feel they are working for nothing, then they are more likely to get worn out and productivity will decrease. Consider doing grand gestures a few times a year to show your workers how much you care, but also remember to check in with your employees regularly to express your gratitude. You will be amazed at how your workers’ attitudes will improve.
