10 Steps to Bettering Employee Engagement and Results
Create a company culture where employee engagement and results hold clout, and you will see productivity rise while turnover drops. It takes a lot more than a few company-wide memos, however, to get your employees to move on to that next level. Here are 10 steps you can take to better engagement amidst your staff.
1.Engage More, Perform Higher
Plenty of variables can increase engagement amongst your employees, but the ones on which to focus are the points that result in higher levels of performance. Employee satisfaction is important, but more so when it is in direct relation to results.
2.Embrace a Motivational Culture
The culture within the company needs to be one of a motivational nature, where employees have freedom to grow and incentive to see their colleagues thrive, as well. Motivational culture is not something that can be led, but needs to be integrated into the day-to-day experience in order to make it a long term component of the brand.
3. Engagement From the Top Down
Engagement from employees is not likely to occur if they do not see similar behavior displayed in the top ranks. Those at lower levels need to see the ones above embodying and actively supporting the company culture. It is difficult to believe that a culture is integrated into the brand when people see those on the top line acting with disregard for the very type of employee engagement and results being encouraged.
4.Hire With Culture in Mind
Fully flesh out the culture that you want to incorporate into your brand and then hire candidates who you believe are already a good fit. While it is possible to course correct for those already on staff towards the values you wish to have present, it is easier to promote it from day one to reduce resentment and pushback down the road. Take note of personality and behavioral traits of new applicants that would harmonize well with the brand’s culture in addition to their education and past experience.
5.Seek Feedback
The best way to check in with how your employees feel is to ask them! Send employee surveys to measure engagement to obtain a starting point. However, do not put all of your energy into high-tech methods of delivering and collecting the information; put plenty of effort into the interpretation of what the feedback means for your company. This will give you an idea of what is and is not working so you can effectively introduce change.
6.Create Better Bosses
It does not matter how wonderful or skilled your newly hired employee is if you place them in a position where they report to a less than stellar boss. Despite the general culture of the company, if one’s direct superior is not engaging in quality behavior in such a way that fosters employee engagement and results, you are at risk for losing star talent to a competitor. Help those in managerial roles develop the right skills and help them understand the importance of listening to and connecting with their employees, focusing less on leading and more on engaging.
7.Communication
One of the most important elements of engagement is communication. Prioritize this throughout the company. Make sure information divulged throughout the ranks is clear and consistent. Avoid participating in secretive behavior or employees will feel like outsiders, resulting in less willingness to engage.
8.Individualize
While there are some basic ways you can engage employees, keep in mind that each one is an individual and will respond in a unique way. Get to know the person and get a feel for his or her particular needs and interests or even concerns, and then act accordingly to receive the ultimate employee engagement and results.
9.Track Progress
Do not let progress be an abstract concept throughout the company. Track employee engagement and results — then communicate it! Let all personnel stay updated on how the company as well as individuals are doing in regards to reaching clearly defined goals.
10.Reward and Reinforce
Money is a nice bonus and probably will not be turned down, but it is not the only way to show appreciation. Reward and reinforce with a sense of achievement to help employees see that they have accomplished something of value to the company. Feeling as though he or she is integral to the brand’s success is an important motivator.
Integrate these tips to get employees fully vested and on board with your brand. A conscious effort to create a positive culture will lead to a dramatic change in employee engagement and results throughout the company.
