MightyRecruiterThe Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 is a federal law that allows employees to take time off work in order to deal with medical emergencies they themselves are going through or look after a family member going through a trying time. This law applies to employees who have worked at least 12 months at the same company, and they are entitled to take 12 weeks of unpaid leave. Situations where workers can use their time off under the law include a serious medical condition that makes the employee incapable of performing his or her duties, the birth of a baby and caring for a family member who has experienced an extreme illness or injury.
