Under the federal government, the Department of Labor (DOL) is responsible for enforcing and administering various federal labor laws. These include overtime pay, wages and hours, child labor, FMLA and workplace health and safety.
The DOL is cabinet-level and is headed by the U.S. Secretary of Labor. There are a number of agencies that fall under the Department of Labor, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Employment and Training Administration (ETA). The DOL’s purpose is to improve working conditions, uphold benefits and rights in the workplace, advance opportunities for quality employment, and to carry out other actions related to supporting the welfare of employees, job seekers and retired workers in the United States.Related terms:
