One primary function of the BLS is to carry out research in order to determine how much the average American family would need to earn in order to have a fair standard of living. For all of the data the BLS releases, it needs to satisfy certain elements of criteria. For example, the data needs to be relevant to current economic issues, and it must remain impartial in both presentation and subject matter. The BLS was founded 1884. All surveys fall within four main categories: productivity, working conditions and compensation, prices and levels of employment.
